Lariam (Mefloquine) is an effective anti-malarial used in both the prevention and treatment of malaria in areas where there is a high risk of infection. Lariam uses the active ingredient Mefloquine hydrochloride and works by attacking the parasite that causes malaria.

Taking Lariam (Mefloquine):

Dosage for adults:

• 1 Tablet of Lariam (Mefloquine) per week (*Same day each week)
• Ensure you start your course 2 weeks before travelling
• Continue your course for the duration of your stay
• Continue your course for 4 weeks after your holiday

To maximise the effectiveness of your Malarone take you tablet with food or a milk drink where possible to aid absorption into the body.

Warnings:

Please note this product is not suitable for children or for adults weighing less than 5kg or under 3 months old. Lariam (Mefloquine) may also not be suitable if any of the following apply:

• If you are allergic to lariam or any of its ingredients (see below)
• If you suffer from liver problems
• If you are pregnant or breast feeding
• If you suffer from depression or other mental illnesses

Side Effects:

Side effects from taking Lariam (Mefloquine) are uncommon however if you notice any of the following reactions whilst taking Lariam you should consult a doctor.

• Dizziness
• Sleeping problems (insomnia)
• Depression
• Loss of appetite
• Fever
• Rash which may be itchy
• Cough

Severe Reactions are uncommon however if you notice any of the following reactions whilst taking Lariam (Mefloquine) you should stop your treatment and contact a doctor immediately:

• Allergic reaction including rash and itching, tightness of the chest or throat, breathing difficulty, swelling of the face, eyes, lips or tongue.
• Severe skin reactions including rash and severe blistering.
