Chromium is a trace mineral essential for normal metabolism and growth, being a key factor in the processing of sugars within the body. Dietary chromium is obtained from wholemeal cereal and grain products (provided soils are not chromium depleted), nuts, seafood and yeast. Highly refined foods (e.g. refined sugar, refined flour used in white bread) contain little of this essential mineral, which is also easily lost during cooking or food processing. Chromium supplements are available in both organic and inorganic forms; although inorganic forms of chromium are cheaper, the body absorbs organic forms of chromium much more efficiently. Chromium supplements are available in several chemical forms (e.g. chromium picolinate or chromium polynicotinate).

Bio-Chromium contains yeast-bound chromium in a highly absorbable form. Each tablet contains 100 microgram of chromium.

Bio-Chromium is manufactured under Danish pharmaceutical control. The preparation is blister packed for maximum bio-availability.

What does Bio-Chromium do?

Chromium contributes to the maintenance of normal blood glucose levels. Chromium is a component of the so called Glucose Tolerance Factor (GTF) complex, which together with the hormone insulin, regulates carbohydrate metabolism and glucose balance within the body. Inorganic chromium is not incorporated into the GTF, and not all forms of organic chromium are GTF active. Chromium makes the action of insulin more effective.

How to take Bio-Chromium:

Side-effects:

The toxicity of the chemical form of chromium used in Bio-Chromium (chromium 3) is very low. In man, no general adverse effects have been reported with a chromium intake much higher than the recommended dose of 200mcg/ day. Rats given chromium at a dose of 100mg/Kg bodyweight in their feed showed no long-term toxic effects.

Chromium supplements taken with meals are less likely to cause irritation to the stomach. Organic forms of chromium supplements are much less likely than inorganic forms to cause gastrointestinal disturbance. Chromium supplements should be taken with caution by patients with impaired renal function or diabetes (the insulin dose may need to be adjusted). Bio-Chromium should not be taken by individuals with a known allergy to yeast.
